Caldwell Esselstyn, MD — “No More Heart Attacks — Ever”

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women. But, as Dr. Caldwell B. Esselstyn, Jr., a former internationally known surgeon, researcher and clinician at the Cleveland Clinic, explains, it can be prevented, reversed, and even abolished. Dr. Esselstyn argues that conventional cardiology has failed patients by developing treatments that focus only on the symptoms of heart disease, rather than the cause. This is a 10-minute excerpt from Dr. Esselstyn’s 90-minute talk at the Healthy Lifestyle Expo 2007. GO VEGAN!
@delafoo it works really !!! After a heart attack I got a stent and I had to stay with life long medical prescriptions … until I started researching my self and I learned about the Esselstyn’s + Campbell’s + Gerson’s + McDougall’s and other therapies: all whole plant-based nutrition and now I don’t need any drugs. SHAME OM THE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT AND FARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY FOR THEIR MASSIVE “LEGALIZED” KILLINGS !!!
Dr. Esselstyn’s program works extremely well in preventing and reversing heart disease. He has a book “Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.”
I’ve happily been on whole food nutrition with no meat, fish, fowl, eggs, dairy, nuts, seeds, avocados, olives or OIL; have reversed my arterial plaques and feel great.
@Inflamsx Hmm. Well, very interesting. I would say you are an outlier (stastically) for sure. However, Dr. Esselstyn is a bit more strict in the typical vegan diet in that he advocates no nuts of any kind, no avacado, no oils, no salt. Did you/do you exercise regularly? Are you still vegan? What was done as treatment? Did you/Do you now have stress management techniques?… if you want to email me, email delabeaux2 at gmail.
@Inflamsx I guess it was the high amounts of brazil nuts combined with bananas that did it for me, aswell as the high amounts of stress. To give you an idea, there were days that I ate around 200 to 300 g of brazil and macademian nuts + around 8 banasas a day.
But yeah, I always been thought the nuts where actually good for the heart.
@delafoo I was 100% vegan, my diet consisted mainly of vegetables fruit and nuts and seeds. I only touched anything comming directly from a plant. I also eated sprouts and beans. But I have to nuancate , I got my heart attack 2 months later after the blood test was being done. during those 2 months I experienced high amounts of stress and I did not follow my eating plan 100% as I was sometimes eating alot of nuts and fruits.
@Inflamsx Interesting. Did you eat ANY oil? ANY refined foods at all? Was your MI diagnoses as being atherosclerotic or mechanical? And…. WAS a vegan? A junk-food vegan or a whole foods, plant based, absolutely zero refined foods with no salt, no oil vegan? One can be a Pepsi and cookies vegan, not that you were… your replies are welcome!
@delafoo My stats BEFORE heart attack:
Wt: 189
Total Cholesterol: 107
Average Blood Pressure 111/76
Not a joke, I was vegan and got a heart attack
@Pilaf1984 Also, there is a consensus that whole foods always preferable to refined foods, and thus, it’s better to get fats from whole foods than to add fat to other things in its refined state (i.e. plant oils). But anyway, do continue to do your own research on this if you like, but don’t obsess over the minute details.
@Pilaf1984 We don’t need 30% of our daily calories from fat, like the USDA recommends (none of these doctors recommend that much). Third, while it’s true there is some discrepancy about the details, do yourself a favor and focus on the SIMILARITIES, not the differences amongst all of this information. What’s agreed upon is that a plant-based diet is the healthiest, and we should be eating a lot of fruits and vegetables, as they are the most nutritious foods on the planet.
@Pilaf1984 First of all, saturated fat isn’t “bad”. We require some of it in our diets. Obviously, too much of it is not good, and trans fat should be avoided completely. Second, if you’re eating a variety of whole foods, it’s close to impossible to eat a diet containing ZERO fat. For instance, fruit gets about 9% of it’s calories from fat, and vegetables also contain a small amount (obviously, it depends on the food). These lower percentages are more in line with what humans actually need.
I have read his book : it might be good for people with heart condition . But NO meat, fish, cheese , olive oil ,eggs ,avocados…it seems exagerated !These choices are not explained much in the book. Moreover half of it is.. recipes! I would prefer a lot of vegetables and legumes ok with a little animal protein.
@Pilaf1984 Why wait 10 years? Do some research, the answers are clear, dedicate your self!
There’s still a lot of debate among vegan advocating nutritionists about fats, actually… it’s pretty evenly split. None of these doctors recommend eating “bad fats” like saturated fats or trans fats, but about half of them go farther and recommend no fat at all while others recommend “good fats” like olive oil, nuts and avacados. It’s a bit confusing really. Maybe within another ten years there will be more of a consensus.
Dr. Esselstyn and Dr. Campbell (China Study) said NO AVOCADOES. It is the only vegtable he does not want one to eat. Read his book: “Reversing Heart Disease” then you will understand instead of spouting off about things you do not know.
thanks a lot . your information is very helpful.
Avocado are a great heart food! Even though they are high in fat, the fat is good fat or mono-unsaturated which is good for your body. The issue is the calories because fat has nine calories per gram versus four calories for carbohydrates and protein. But the fat in avocados actually protect the body and the heart as it promotes heart health. All fat is not equal so please eat your avocados because they are great for your body.

What is the product called? Thanks
thanks. Oh yeah, animal fat is the worst. Should check Dr Campbell s report.
@Dinuka81
I think avocado are fine. Just like with everything else, just don’t overdo it. You do need some fat though. I’d much rather consume the fat from an avocado vs. a piece of bacon!
does your doctor work for free? or your auto mechanic or anyone else?
