Top Tips For A Healthy Heart- Strategies For Lowering Cholesterol And Blood Pressure

If you have high cholesterol and high blood pressure then make no mistake you are at risk of heart disease. Heart Disease is a fact of life for so many of us these days. It doesn’t have to be though. The simple changes in lifestyle recommended here are supported almost universally by the medical profession. They come at no cost and are extremely effective. Anyone at any age can start to implement them right now and gain the benefits.

You’ve heard it a million times before but it is so important it is worth repeating again and again. Stop Smoking Now! This is by far the biggest cause of heart disease. Even if you’ve been smoking all your life you will immediately start to feel the benefits.

Regular gentle exercise regardless of your current physical condition is enough in itself to reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 30 %. Avoid going out and hitting the tarmac right from day one. It is much better to start with a gentle stroll and slowly build up.

Be aware of your saturated fat intake. Try to keep this to a maximum intake of 20g a day. Avoid any trans fats. These two fats are well known causes of arterial inflammation. Inflamed arteries will reduce the flow of blood to the heart and long term can lead to heart failure. Replace these fats with high quality ones such as olive oil. Fats contained in nuts, seeds and avocadoes are all beneficial.

Inline with this comes the recommendation to floss daily. This will lower your risk of periodontal disease. But what has that got to do with a healthy heart. Peridontal disease has been shown to directly cause arterial inflammation which as stated above stresses the heart.

Get into the habit of reading labels on your food. Identify those foods that have high sugar levels and remove them from your diet. Check your salad dressings. Very often the most common foods that you’d least expect to contain sugar are actually loaded with it. Again the reason you want to avoid sugar is the detrimental affect it has on the health of your arteries.

Drink a glass of wine each day. It is not clearly understood why but people who don’t drink any alcohol at all are more at risk from heart disease than those who enjoy a regular tipple.
